Like the rest of you deadatics, my passion for favorite dead songs switches and heads into new avenues, unexpectedly all the time. Naturally, I have some all time favs, but every now and then a song hits me with a passion that I simply need to chase better and better versions.
Wheel is my new search. Love many of the laid back lead in jams, love the lyrics and more importantly, would love to head thoughts from the archive all stars what versions are your favs.
As always thanks ahead and keep up the great work of living the dead.

My favorite version appears on "Garcia". Love his pedal steel playing. I think for the most part this song (for me at least) always fell a little short when played live.

The "Garcia" version is absolutely gorgeous and brilliant - sublime pedal steel. I feel that "An Odd Little Place" is an essential part of the whole. Easily my favorite Jerry solo album.

Favorite live version is Alpine 8/7/82, the Wheel slowly drifting in from a Space that was way way way out there. This show was released as DP32, but honestly I think the audience tape I have had for years does that sequence, and the show, more justice, with a bit more Phil in the mix at key points than the board. (The whole 2nd set is excellent- the China-Rider that opens the set is my fave post '74.)

As I mentioned in another thread recently 10/2/77 is a nice version with a neat segue into Truckin'.

In doing the 1981 year in review, I happened upon this little 12 and a half long monster, tucked into a show known more for the extended Shakedown Street...easily the best version of the 80s I've heard...

Thanks for all the input on Wheel greats. Look forward to hearing the many versions. Just need to find the time, work is truly getting in the way of a better lifestyle. But then again we do have Pandora running all day loaded with Dead, but can't over do it or my side kick might drop dead.

From the 1984 Project....

7/13/84 at the Greek was pretty darn good.
